AirVenture 2002 Lancair ES ExampleFirst | Previous | Next | Last | Home - (8 of 20) The blue plate of aluminum is a backing plate for mounting the landing main gear receptacles. These receptacles are the parts that mount into the fuselage to hold the landing gear main legs in place. The builder has to drill all of the holes that the AN bolts pass through. Also those holes must be countersunk. Unfortunately, those holes and countersink bevels are too big for the countersink cutters that you will likely have a microstop countersink. These holes must be countersunk with a Back Countersink Tool. This tool is not easy to find. Even most of the aircraft tool businesses that most experimental amateur built plane builders are familiar with do not carry this tool. Below you can see all 8 bolts in place with the head of the bolt flush with the surface of the backing plate because the holes were countersunk. The Lancair ES construction manual does tell you to countersink the holes, but it does not tell you how. I learned how from Mike Salzman.
