December 2001

12/19/01: Today I received the replacement fuel probe directly from Vision Microsystems. Lancair handled the case very well. I did not have to push at all to get them to replace the damaged probe. I do get the impression that it helped that I was able to provide digital photos of the damage though. So far I have had only good experiences with Lancair.

12/8/01 - 12/18/01: With things going on related to the holiday season, I have had very little time to work on the project. Any time I have had has been devoted to the project, not this website. I will resume entries and try to back-fill some information once things return more to normal.

12/3/01 - 12/7/01: Lancair is working with me to come to a good solution for the fuel probe problem. I have learned a lesson from this experience. I could have simplified matters if I had done something different. The tube that the probes were shipped in was crushed at one end. Before I signed for the CF delivery, I visually checked the probes to look for signs that the probes were bent or crushed. They looked fine, so I did not make note of the damage to the tube on the bill of lading. It was later that I found the damage to the wires. Despite the fact that I did not see any damage to the probes, I should have noted the damage to the tube on the bill of lading just in case we found something later. In the future, I will document damage in writing no matter what.

12/1/01 - 12/2/01: Saturday I took the pictures of the Vision Microsystems fuel probe that was damaged in shipping so that Lancair can see what the damage looks like. Photos

I also worked some more on the fiberglass cutting table. Earlier I reported that I was not happy with how things were going with the cutting table. I was able to fix some of the things I did not like. I will report more of the details when I have pictures to post.

While I was working today, many people were flying in the nice weather and doing touch and goes at West Houston Airport. There were many homebuilts flying (2 RV-4, 1 Vari-Eze, 1 Pitts, 1 Glasair III RG, 2 Kitfox, etc.). The RV-4s were Jim Lewman, and Arnold Milton. I don’t know the Glasair pilot, but I know he purchased the plane fairly recently. He is not the builder. His plane really does scoot through the pattern. When I am watching Cessnas and Pipers, it is motivating to see the planes fly by. When I am watching a lot of homebuilts fly by, it almost starts to become torture. Someday I will be in the pattern flying N198TD. [NOTE: Mystery solved... all of the homebuilts were flying because EAA Chapter 774 was flying Young Eagles flights. The Vari-Eze was likely Gary Hunter.]

Sunday is cold and rainy... too cold and humid to be able to mix epoxy resin... too wet to break out the power tools to cut MDF or 2x4s in the driveway. So, I will spend a little time drilling holes and grinding today. Maybe I will be able to add a little content to this website.
